Sandy Steen Bartholomew
Born in Guam and raised in Massachusetts with a medical examiner/pathologist mother, Sandy was, literally, raised in a laboratory. To keep herself busy, she drew pictures, wrote stories, and made paper mache "specimens" - that glowed in the dark. (It's a long story). Cartooning, illustrating and photoography kept her busy until she went to Brown University to study Egyptology. She also attended the School of Visual Arts, and then, finally, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. After a... very long... wait, Sandy got her Masters in Applied Cartooning from the Center for Cartoon Studies in 2017.
As an author, illustrator, cartoonist, mixed-media artist, and a Certified Zentangle® Teacher, Sandy likes to fuse together all these passions, as well as hand-lettering and sketch-noting. She runs an Etsy store (Bumblebat) and a studio in her converted barn (Beez Ink), and publishes her own comics and Inspiration Sketchbooks (Bumblebat Books). For fun, drawing on the walls, reading YA novels, hula hooping, and watching movies - top her list.
An off-and-on member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators since she was 15, she remembers when there was no "I" in SCBWI.
Sandy lives with her two kids and a cat in their colorful, mixed-media house in Warner, NH.
