What are things that inspire you?
I am inspired by kindness, imagination and love. There is so much going on in the world that can make us feel overwhelmed. One of my favorite stories of all times is called Hope for the Flowers. It is about a caterpillar who wants to get to the top of the caterpillar heap to see what’s there. The illustrations are simple, yet brilliant. It is a story that share why following the leader is always the best path. That short story has informed my life.
Creativity is my life force. More than anything, when I can express myself in a way that can help someone else, I feel complete. Laughter is another thing that inspires me. It actually saved my life. (But that’s another story.) And, sometimes an angel, appearing as a person, can say just the right thing at just the right time.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my family and friends. My husband is truly my soulmate; he champions me on a daily basis. My dad, now an octogenarian, has shared the most amazing wisdom, during my lifetime. My aunt has taken me by the hand during the creation of Paisley’s Last Quill, helping me refine ever detail, while cheering me on. My kids are the most important creation, that are at the center of everything I do . . . and my friends breath life into my heart at every turn.
This journey has experience has forced me to become my story ~ believe in myself, no matter what anyone else thinks!
Callie, you were the one that suggested that I illustrate my own book. You believed in me. Along the way, you went over every detail: how a foot was positioned; the colors of the background; expressions on the faces, and on and on. Never in my wildest imagination would I have guessed what it entails to illustrate a book. Thank you for seeing what was possible and taking the time to fine tune each illustration.
Illustrating a book is really creating 15 to 32 paintings that can be enjoyed for a lifetime! I have a new respect for picture books. Every author and illustrator is a winner, just for bringing a story to life!
What other projects are you working on?
Right now it is everything Paisley! I see Paisley as the Ambassador for QUILL POWER! I’m in the process of organizing Paisley Teas, where girls from 3 to 103, will hear Paisley’s story, share wisdom and participate in an inspirational DIY ~ creating their own quills.
Right from the get-go, I have envisioned the Paisley animated movie and musical that will inspire people. I’m looking forward to the long version of the story so that every one will learn why she entered the fashion world; why Zavannah is the way she is, etc. My dream is that there will be a clothes line that Paisley & Friends designs for both big and little girls.
The Self-worth Initiative, gives me a platform to make a difference in as many people’s lives as I can. I’m sure that other projects, stories and opportunities will present themselves . . . all I need to do is take the next step forward.
